It’s unfortunate that Men in Motion, the showcase for the male dancer that opened in January, got there first. But Kings of the Dance, which comes to us from America, has the advantage of seriously high-profile talent. Roberto Bolle, Marcelo Gomes, Ivan Vasiliev, Denis Matvienko and Leonid Sarafanov — five of the best that ballet has to offer.
The evening starts well. Nacho Duato’s Remanso (1997), with solo piano waltzes by the Spanish composer Granados, is a lighthearted look at masculinity. It allows three men — Gomes, Sarafanov and Matvienko — the chance to be macho, impish, ridiculous and romantic by turns.
