THE DYING SWAN
Choreographic composition
Music by CAMILLE SAINT-SAENS
(from the Carnival des animaux suite)
Choreography by MICHAEL FOKINE
World premiere: 22 December 1907, Mariinsky Theatre,
St.Petersburg
Michael Fokine created The Dying swan in just a few moments-Anna
Pavlova was in white tutu for Swan Lake, but her
partner had fallen ill the day before an important tutu, symbolizing
that she had been shot and wounded, and the word ”Dying” was
added to the title. It is an extremely simple piece of choreography:
tiny, tiny steps en pointe, a slight movement of the arms.
It has never left the stage for almost a century now… Technically
accessible to either a prima ballerina or a ballet student, it can
be performed on a stage of any size. And although Fokine issued concert.
As her best friend, “Misha” could not let “Anya” down… They
chose the music in the matter of seconds- Fokine was a professional
mandolin player and knew the mandolin arrangement of Saint-Saens’ work.
Anna Pavlova then added a ruby brooch to her a series of photographs
and detailed description of the dance known as The Dying Swan,
almost every ballerina dances her own variation. But only a few dancers,
such as Maya Plisetskaya and Galina Ulanova, the two greatest Russian
ballerinas of the 20th century, can be compared with the ballet’s
first performer. Ulyana Lopatkina is currently considered the finest
Russian performer of The Dying Swan.
